Mark Zuckerberg. Founder of Facebook. Owner of Instagram. Current recipient of mockery on both platforms.
In the mid 2000s, the Harvard dropout launched a website that was intended to bring people around the world together. Unfortunately everyone has gathered on that site to relentlessly bully him for being a weird, little freak.
Before feeling any sympathy, it is important to remember that it all started with Mr. Zuckerberg making a ‘hot or not’ list involving female classmates. More recently, he was selling user data to influence elections. So, in the grand scheme of things, maybe it’s okay to liken him to the ghost of an anemic Victorian aristocrat.
Is he a robot that can only speak in 1s and 0s? Is he part-lizard? Is the skin on his face actually a synthetic skin-like material? Why does he look so strange surf boarding? Does he regret his role in the Myanmar genocide? These are all legitimate questions. Though, it does seem quite rude to be discussing his awful appearance, personality and overall effect on the world, on a platform that he designed.
Given how his work has impacted lives around the world, particularly in Myanmar, there is no reality wherein he could claim this ridicule was a surprise. Yet he made it easier for it to happen.
Some claim this to be a form of masochism. He enjoys the rude comments. Maybe he feeds of off it. Maybe his energy is sustained by the repeated barbs about his hollow expression and his continued contributions towards a more damaged world.
